Yao Ming AIDS video

China’s golden boy, Yao Ming, diversifies his celebrity becoming the goodwill ambassador to help stop discrimination against people living with HIV

Shanghaiist translates the Yao Ming AIDS video:
Woman's thought bubble: "I've heard you can contract AIDS from holding hands or eating with an infected person."
Man's thought bubble: "I believe I could get AIDS from a mosquito bite."
Voice over guy: "Actually mosquito bites and holding hands, eating with infected persons can not cause you to contract AIDS. Don't misunderstand AIDS. And even more, don't discriminate against AIDS carriers."
Yao Ming: "Good friends are friends, whether they have AIDS or not. Let our world not have misunderstanding or discrimination."

Although providing treatment for HIV and AIDS to all in need is still China's largest obstacle, connected to that issue is the ongoing discrimination people living with HIV and AIDS in China face. Many people don't get tested or seek treatment after they find out their status out of fear of discrimination against them.

China’ initiative to combat the stigma against people with HIV/AIDS, of which the Yao Ming AIDS video is part, comes on the heals of the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition -- China summit in Shanghai where Michel Sidibé, the Executive Director of UNAIDS said “Stigma against people living with HIV [in China] is one of the biggest barriers to accessing HIV prevention and treatment services. The inclusion and leadership of civil society in the response to AIDS is essential in overcoming these barriers and in developing and implementing programs that can reach people in need.”

Although Xu Jianguang, director of the Shanghai Health Bureau, points out that Shanghai still has a low prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Shanghai, all cities have a long way to go and we're happy to see that China's big names are getting on board. Now we just hope in that in the next Yao Ming AIDS video, they let Yao talk more -- isn't that kind of why he's there?
