A Chinese film is set to break all Chinese box office records --- guess which one
Don't expect to see this beside your local pile of pirated DVDs. If so, expect to not see your local DVD pirate the following day. It’s no surprise to China watchers that the star-packed Chinese-language ode to the country’s 60 years of existence "The Founding of a Republic" (“建国大业”) is on track to surpass the RMB 400 milion box office record set by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." (The previous record holder was "Titanic" at a respectable RMB 360 million.)
Since its September release, "The Founding of a Republic" has grossed RMB 330 million and China Film Group Corp’s assistant president Zhao Haicheng tells the Financial Times that he expects “the Chinese film to match [RMB 400 million] within 10 days.”
Detractors questioned whether the film’s nationalist tone coupled with a debate over the citizenship of its Chinese-born stars would impact The Founding's profitability. Clearly critics have their answer for at least the Chinese market.
It also helps that the police are taking a hard line against pirated copies of nationalistic movies.
