Obama in China
The flowers failed to get in the way of a meeting between Obama and Shanghai Communist Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng on Monday.

Even though U.S. President Barack Obama is only spending 72 hours (if that) in China, local and international media have published enough material to keep people reading the whole time Obama’s here. We continue to join the fray, here's our post on the articles actually worth a read:

Even if you can’t sneak into the Ritz to see Obama in China, get your photo with almost the man himself at Madame Tussauds.

Part of Obama’s schedule while he’s in Shanghai includes a Q&A session with young Chinese. Some websites have put out an open call for people to submit questions. The first question ChinaSMACK translated: “I want to ask President Obama, how do you deserve the Nobel Prize? -- Please be honest!” This should be an interesting session.

Obama might be meeting with Chinese youth, but most of China won’t be able to see it -- at least not on CCTV. Expect it to be on Twitter feeds and internet portals.

Who thought Obama’s name in China could be so confusing? Well apparently it is since there are now two official translations of it: 奥巴马 (àobāmǎ) in the Chinese press and 欧巴马 (ōubāmǎ) which the U.S.  Embassy uses. Oops, and there doesn't seem to be a clear answer to which one is correct.

Tweets of the week on Obama in China as reported by the China Digital Times:

  • @kirk1031 The latest instructions from the Ministry of Truth: All websites need to strictly control their content during the period of Obama’s visit. The following contents must be deleted immediately: 1, Public letters to Obama 2, meeting with dissidents, 3, off-line protests, 4, attacking Chinese government in vague and disguised language.
  • @jasontsui From an insider at Shanghai Jiaotong University: Six students from the university were picked to participate in the dialogue with Obama. Students who will be participating in the dialogue with Obama have been selected from different universities in Shanghai, two to five from each school. Currently all these students have been partially restricted in their personal freedom, living and participating in activities together.
  • @wodejia Obama. Please stay in China! You are the one who can beat GFW!
  • @blogtd #Obama President Obama, if you cannot update your Twitter and Facebook while you are in China, I will be happy to provide humanitarian aid.
  • @wenyunchao: Obama, Chinese netizens are calling you to tweet (push) the Wall (GFW) together. [In Chinese, "tweet" and "push" are homynyms.]
