Attack of the giant deodorant
Beijing generates an average of one ton of trash per person every day.In an attempt to mask the aroma of L’eau de Garbage, the local government is set to aim 100 deodorant guns at Beijing’s Asuwei (阿苏卫) landfill next month.
The measure is a response to last year’s 57 percent increase in Bejing’s garbage-related public complaints, according to the Guardian.
The guns can spray dozens of gallons of deodorant per minute, at distances of up to 50 meters (164 feet).
But in a city that generates more than one ton of garbage per person per day, the deodorant tactic is merely a stopgap. The government needs a sustained public awareness campaign to raise the level of recycled waste from its current 4 percent.
Treehugger sums things up nicely: “It seems like Beijing is missing the target... The city's waste problem is growing at about 8 percent every year. And Lady Speedstick ain't going to cut it.”
Beijing waste management officials have not yet commented on whether the landfill’s stench will be combated with citrus mist, sea breeze, or vanilla musk fragrances.
