Tom Cruise opens a Sina weibo account
It's official: Tom Cruise is microblogging. Hopefully his account won't go the way of Pulitzer Prize-winner Nicholas Kristof's, which was shut down in under an hour.According to Sina news, Tom Cruise is the latest celebrity to join the microblog crazy, opening his own Sina Weibo account yesterday, February 23.
“We’re having fun talking to you and our new friends at http://t.sina.com.cn. It’s the Chinese Twitter, but with a lot more functionality,” tweeted Tom Cruise, announcing the move to his Twitter following.
Cruise's new account has become a big news, blanketing the Chinese Internet less than two hours after his first post.

Cruise’s Chinese fans warmly welcomed the new celebrity user: “Can’t believe it! Welcome!” posted Pei Ninier.
However, others remain a bit skeptical about the move, and posted comments questioning if it was actually Tom Cruise who signed up for the weibo account.
Sina user Legendalex from Tianjin posts on her own account, “Tom Cruise? Really? Is it true?”
Cruise’s weibo has already been certified by Sina as "official."
By noon on February 24, one day after opening the account, Tom Cruise’s microblog had four English-language messages on it, and already had 24,232 followers -- and it's growing.
“Hello and thank you to everyone who is being so nice to us here. It’s exciting to be here with you,” wrote Cruise in his most recent post.
“We look forward to learning more about 微博 [weibo].“

Cruise is popular among young Chinese, where he’s affectionately referred to as “Tom Brother” (“阿汤哥“).
Cruise’s use of weibo is sure to gain much attention in China as well as internationally. And, the move has the Chinese fans of many other international stars starting to asks: will more celebrities follow cruise to Sina?
