In memory of the Jiaozhou Lu fire
Local artists take to the street to paint a memorial for those affected by the Jiaozhou Lu fire
24 November, 2010Although there’s disagreement in Shanghai about how to officially recognize those who perished in the recent Jiaozhou Lu apartment fire, local Shanghai-based street art collective the Oops Crew aren’t waiting for an official decree.
The crew, consisting of Tin.G, Snow, AEK, Reign, Hurricane, Redim and Storm, have grabbed their spray cans and erected a mural entitled “Shanghai Be Strong” (上海坚强) on Shanghai’s Moganshan Lu.
The crew are part of the EDGE Creative Collective, and the images were originally captured on NeochaEDGE.
The city is supporting the families of those who died in the fire in another way, quickly and publicly compensating them.
Families who lost relatives in the high-rise inferno in Shanghai's Jing'an District will receive RMB 960,000, reports Shanghai Daily.
The sum of RMB 960,000 is made up of RMB 650,000 for “death compensation” and RMB 310,000 of “government and social donations.”
Those who lost apartments in the fire will also be compensated for those losses at market rates says Zhang Renliang, director of Jing'an District. But, even with this money, some residents are still not satisfied.
"It's unacceptable," said Chen Weizhong, who lost his 24-year-old daughter, Yi, in the fire. "Even double the compensation would not be enough to make up for what we've lost."
Many residents said they wanted to be given new apartments in Jing'an District rather than money as the rate they’ll be given for their lost homes will not be able to buy time the same caliber of space in the area.
