Liu Xiang dominates in Shanghai with an eye toward London
China's former Olympic and world champion hurdler, Liu Xiang scores big at the Shanghai Diamond League
16 May, 2011Shanghai-born hurdles superstar Liu Xiang raced in front of hometown crowds this past weekend, winning the 110-meter hurdling event at the Shanghai Diamond League.
The Chinese sports star told reporters that although he was happy with his performance this weekend, he will only be satisfied with a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Liu Xiang let Chinese fans around the world down when he pulled out of the 2008 Olympic games at the last minute due to injury, and only began competing again at last year's Guangzhou Asian Games, winning the gold medal before a crowd of 70,000 in 13.09 seconds.
At this year’s Shanghai Diamond League, Liu Xiang broke American David Oliver's 18-race run to win in 13.07 seconds, his best result in more than three years.
Oliver was a bronze medalist in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
"I think I can run inside 13 seconds this year -- after today's victory, I am more confident," Liu Xiang told reporters after the race. "If I'm lucky, I think I can win a medal in London. But I will not be satisfied with only a medal."
The 27-year-old former world champion, who is also known as the "Flying Man", showed Shanghai fans his new technique. He now cuts the number of steps he takes -- from eight to seven -- before launching into the first hurdle, part of his efforts to make it to the top three in London.
