Tibet travel ban imposed

Foreigners are banned from traveling to Tibet in March -- apparently they can't take the cold
Tibet travel ban - chinaIf you want to see this scene for yourself, you'll have to wait until April.

If you were planning to hit the Tibetan plateau this month, you better have a back-up plan as Chinese authorities announce that the region is off limits to foreign tourists.

"The tourism bureau will not give permission to foreigners to come to Tibet in March," said an employee at the Xizang Tourist General Company in the region's capital Lhasa according to a report on Channel News Asia.

"They can't come to Tibet in March and as far as April is concerned we are still awaiting notification [of any rule changes]," continued the employee.

Limiting travel to Tibet is not a new policy. Foreigners need special travel permits for the region in addition to your standard Chinese visa.

Senior Chinese official, Zhang Qingli and CCP boss in Tibet, told the press that, according to the New York Times, foreigners were banned from the region due to concerns about how they would take the region's cold weather.

But many suspect that the ban is ahead of the third anniversary of anti-government riots in the area. The 2008 event led to the prohibition of foreign tourists in Tibet for over a year.
