Chinese inmates get their Zen through yoga

Can the 'downward dog' transform violent convicts into model citizens? Some people pay big bucks for a stay at a yoga retreat, but for some Chinese convicts, it's all part of a day's reform
Chinese inmates get their Zen through yogaChinese inmates use yoga to find their Zen place and beat the summer heat.

Don’t tell these guys yoga is a girly sport.

One Chinese prison has added yoga to the daily routines of its inmates convicted of violent crimes an attempt to help them find their inner Zen -- and keep the peace inside the prison walls -- during the country’s hot summer months.

The month-long yoga class will replace “walking” during exercise time, reports Shanghai Daily.

While practicing yoga -- and to continually remind people why they’re there, in case that's an issue -- the inmates all wear shirts with the red Chinese character "inner peace". Good to know where Chinese tax dollars are going. More important: do we see China's next big detox fad in the works?

What next for Chinese inmates? Maybe the government will follow India’s program of early release for those who do yoga. For prisoners in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, they get 15 days knocked off their sentence for every three months spent doing yoga. Not a bad deal.
