Although just about everyone and their Shanghainese mother make shuizhunianyu (catfish in chili sauce), you'll swear by the version at Yuxiang Renjia -- we won't tell your mother.
Yuxiang Renjia is an elegant Sichuan restaurant with three branches, one recently opened near People’s Square with a lot of space and natural light.
Unlike many Chinese dishes, here dishes are plated beautifully, like someone actually thoughtfully arranged it.
If you're looking for the classic (and popular) shuizhunianyu, Yuxiang Renjia does this dish right: thinly cut catfish that looks almost like lace, the chili oil has a clean, sparkling hotness, and the bean sprouts are perfectly crisp-tender.
Yuxiang Renjia also does a fabulous chanzui niuwa.
Another popular dish here is the frog; properly cooked, the frog is flaky-soft and the legs are big and meaty.
This is one of the spicier frog dishes you'll order, but the fuqifeipian here is also one of the best in the city with lots of crushed peanuts, cilantro and hearty slices of beef.
Service matches the food here, the wait staff are uniformly polite and helpful.
