Shanghai’s most decadent burger

A holy trinity of beef, foie gras and truffle delicately sandwiched into a burger is not for the faint of tongue

Shanghai burger
Some things are worth not counting calories for, this Shanghai burger, The Real Thing, is one of them.

The burger, "The Real Thing" at The Puli Hotel Shanghai’s Jing’an Restaurant is definitely not for the faint-hearted … or for Shanghai burger fans on calorie watch. Here’s the reason why: The burger consists of a hand-chopped beef patty, a generous slice of beautifully seared foie gras, truffle and a cheese layered in between two freshly grilled buns.

If that’s not enough to get you salivating, the burger comes with thick-cut potato fries. The calories will surely tick into the thousands from this meal, and every bite is worth it.

Chef de Cuisine Dane Clouston enjoys a burger, or two, himself every now and then. “Combining the beef with the foie gras and truffle is a nice, extravagant option to have at lunch time.” We'll put that in the "understatement of the year" file.

Clouston reveals that “the texture is maintained in the patty because the beef is hand-chopped instead of being minced through a machine.” This time consuming job evidently adds more love into this Shanghai burger. Priced at RMB 180, it is worth every Mao.

But if you have time to linger for an extra 10 minutes, take this lunchtime indulgence a step further -- at risk of committing the (deadly) sinful act of gluttony -- and order the lemon curd pie for dessert anyway.

Repentance for this Shanghai burger and dessert can come later.

I have tried it and its awesome... I will be back for more. It's rather affordable, especially since I am from HK. in HK, such a burger will cost 3 times the price.

I won't go there because of the foie gras. Don't need that type of food here, in France or in the US. It's just not my cup of tea.

Looks decent but agreeing with MrFinn, completely overdone. This looks like a copycat of the Daniel Boulud's burger: http://fashiontribes.typepad.com/main/images/db_burger.jpg Also, why do they feel the necessity to add cheese to the mix? Foie gras and cheese? Really? I have been a die hard foodie for years, exploring most of the restaurants that New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Shanghai, among others, have to offer, and not once have I mixed foie gras and cheese. Is it just me or does this sound the least bit appetizing? On the other hand, I think the addition of black truffle could be nice, if done correctly. Instead of taking the famous db burger and adding a poor choice (cheese) to be distinctive, maybe they should try something like adding white truffles instead of black. That would be both distinctive and delicious.

Does sound tempting indeed. But so overdone. I really thought the whole Burger with Foie Gras & Truffle thing is done. Especially since Burger King is featuring on the Menu in selected UK Outlets. I like my Foie Gras, and I like Burger - but why ruin it with some ( assumingly ) Chinese Black Truffle... And why does it all have to be combined. Honestly, the last thing Shanghai needs is another Place who tries to copy what was trendy years ago. How about going back to the basics ? Or how about a place that sets Trends for a change..
