Mistral -- Shanghai -- main
Mistral’s no-frills Mediterranean chic.

Mistral is a classy and unpretentious joint that keeps the focus on the food, serving up tapas with continental European accents. Think Jamón Ibérico, octopus stew, seafood paella, and homemade foie gras.

Originally run by Spanish chef Joaquín Campos, kitchen duties have now been assumed by Italian chef Patrick Giovenzani, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the menu evolved to feature fewer tapas and more Italian-inspired dishes.

The restaurant seats just 40 people inside (plus 30 on the terrace during warmer months), amid candlelight and decor with an understated Mediterranean vibe.

Depending on how much you imbibe, and whether you go for plates of nibbles or full-on main courses, the damage could be anywhere from RMB 200 to 500 per person. But unlike some Shanghai restaurants that charge you a king’s random for a Bund view or a big-name chef, at Mistral you’re splurging for one worthy cause: your stomach.
