If these are the healthiest meals in Shanghai, we're in trouble

Five meals at 500 calories leave us feeling unsatisfied
healthiest meals in ShanghaiYes, it's less than 500 calories, but we wouldn't exactly call this the ideal meal.

We're fans of SmartShanghai’s Wellbeing column. In a city that lives, works and parties as hard as this one, it’s much needed. But the column's most recent report on five of the healthiest meals in Shanghai left us completely unsatisfied.

We applaud the concept: five meals for under 500 calories. We really didn’t think it was possible with all the waistline-damaging food around, and after looking at the five options presented we’re still not sure it’s doable.

Meal one passes the stomach test with Buckwheat chilled zaru soba noodles for RMB 45. But the subsequent salads at Hamilton House and Bundview and the delicious-looking Herb Encrusted Tuna Loin from Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen left our wallets feeling emptier than our stomachs, coming in at RMB 85, RMB 90 and RMB 98, respectively.

Although we applaud the effort and educational tidbits included in the column, if these are the best low-cal, wallet-friendly and healthiest meals in Shanghai, we'd rather be fat.

And what does it say when there’s no Chinese food included on the list? We want more!
