Yuyintang
This just might be the best way to make your way across Yuyintang when it's packed with the live music-loving masses.

New York had CBGB; Shanghai has Yuyintang. This cramped performance space is the hub of the city’s underground music scene.

Depending on what night you show up, you might find a noise-rock outfit from Jiangsu Province, a Norwegian DJ collective, or a Beijing quartet channeling the Ramones.

On Friday and Saturday nights you’ll be sure to find tattooed Shanghainese hipsters spilling out of the narrow entryway and onto the street, bottles of Qingdao in hand.

Heavy on grit and light on floorspace, Yuyintang is not for the claustrophobic. You’ll leave sweaty and reeking of smoke, but with just a little bit more street-cred and understanding of what the local live music scene is all about than you had when you walked in.
