Beijing's famous Mao Livehouse spreads its influence to Shanghai.
Soma records and Beijing Mao Livehouse's Japanese investors have definitely built a promising live space in Red Town. Whether the bands will play -- and the masses will come -- is a story yet to be told.
Boasting one of the best sound systems for live music in Shanghai and a tiered venue designed for live music lovers, this 800-capacity concert hall has the basic recipe right.
Also sharing this music space is "an alternative record shop" affiliated with the beloved 0093 collective. Mao Livehouse Shanghai is managed by Yan Yang aka Lezi, drummer of Sonnet and former member of The Mushrooms.

Great venue, but their 60RMB door charge, no drink, for a single local act was disappointing. More bang for your entertainment buck at YYT. But Mao definitely has the space, stage, and sound system. Great. Hope it evolves into the live place to go.
