Holiday on ice: Seoul Plaza rink opens tonight
Skip the after-work drinking for an evening of skating: No water, no whiskey. Just ice.
Amuse and impress the commuters stuck in rush hour traffic with your twirls and spills. The Seoul Plaza ice-skating rink is fashionably late to the season, but is finally due to open tonight, Friday December 16, at 6 p.m..
The one thing that can make subzero temperatures worth it -- and even welcome -- is ice skating. And yet there have already been several days of freezing weather without a peep from the skate rink.
But now that they're finally opening, they're opening with fanfare: entrance is free on the first day, and the first 500 visitors will also receive a complimentary red scarf from Woori Bank.
Then again, do we really need those incentives to get excited? This is a day we've all been waiting for anyway. Even on regular days the entrance fee to the city-subsidized Seoul Plaza Skate Rink is only ₩1,000, including skate rentals.

The thrill of the curl can be yours too, courtesy Seoul Plaza ice rink.
"As long as it's not some blizzard, we will be opening," says Lee Yul-gyeong, assistant manager at SCC Korea, the company in charge of running the rink. "Last year, despite several rainy days -- I think it even snowed a little on the opening day -- we did not close even once."
And finally, if you grow bored of ice skating (impossible, we know) you can always take lessons in curling (the obscure, quirky Scottish winter sport that's a bit like bowls on ice), which, along with skating lessons, will be available from December 19.
Hours:
Monday-Thursday, Sunday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Friday-Saturday, and Holidays: 10 a.m.-11 p.m.
