Construction finally begins on Yongsan Business International District

"Korea's new landmark" slated for completion in 2016
A shiny new US$26 billion playground for Seoul's business folk.

Apparently there's no time like the economically-riddled present to break ground on Seoul's next international business hub.

Work began this week on Yongsan International Business District, a US$26 billion project that is being carried out by Dreamhub, a paper company that is pooling the resources of 30 Korean companies including Korail (the national railroad operator) and Samsung C&T, the construction arm of Korea's largest conglomerate.

A whopping 67 buildings will be built in the designated area in the Yongsan district by the end of 2016. However, it will take months of cleaning out the current area before construction on any of the new buildings will commence.

"The construction of the new buildings will start in January 2013," said Park Hak-sun, Manager at Dreamhub. "We are currently controlling the level of pollution that the construction is producing."

Korail CEO Huh Jun-young said he was confident that the district would become "the new landmark of Korea."

With Seoul's landscape changing so rapidly, we probably won't recognize it in a few years.
