Official: Divorcees head 7 out of 100 families in Korea
Korean divorce rates have increased dramatically in the past five years.Perhaps the reason so many Korean romantic dramas feature tragic endings these days is because they are taking cues from real life.
According to a government survey released today, just over seven percent of all heads of families in Korea are divorced.
Daejeon-based organization Statistics Korea analyzed the results of a 2010 population census and found that the number of divorced heads of families stands at 1,267,000, a 40.2 percent increase from 363,000 five years ago.
The actual number of divorcees is estimated to be even higher, as those who went back to live with their parents following their divorce (a common phenomenon in Korea) were not counted in the results.
The same survey found that Kyunggi province to be the most popular area for divorced heads of families to live, while Seoul came in second.
Around 23 percent of Korean divorced families live in Kyunggi, while 20.6 percent live in Seoul.
