Author: Joanne Yao

Joanne Yao is a writer and editor based in Shanghai.

A native daughter of Shanghai, she relocated to California at the age of 4 and then came back (willingly), initially for research and then to live and work. She is a journalist by training as well as a former dining editor and business correspondent for local and international publications.

Since coming to China, durian has replaced the avocado as her favorite fruit.

In her spare time, she likes to walk around looking at architecture, play Internet chess and drink gewürztraminer. According to Joanne, life in Shanghai will truly be complete when: 1. Kindle comes to China and 2. She owns a hypoallergenic cat. She believes that her ability to speak Shanghainese, dodge spitballs and appreciate (read: endure) the oddities of China will take her far in life.
