Hip new ways to interpret the sari
"Firangi Rang Barangi" series, Meera Sethi, 2010, acrylic, ink and pencil on paper; Courtesy Bombay ElectricToronto-based visual artist Meera Sethi's life-sized acrylic on paper works have just gone up at concept boutique Bombay Electric in Colaba.
The works "Ila," "Sitara," "Shobana" and others as part of an exhibition named "Firangi Rang Barangi," exploring "the construction of self through clothing," says Priya Kishore founder and creative director of Bombay Electric.
Sethi's practice references Indian dress history, contemporary fashion and the global textile trade with a particular emphasis on themes of femininity, dress and the play of cross-border, hybrid identities -- the likes of which we come across every day in the melting pot entertainment capital that is Mumbai.
Priced at Rs 88,000 (+ taxes) the pieces went up on March 1 and many are already sold. In fact a quick check with the boutique revealed two are left. So if you'd like to buy, you need to hurry up.
