Remembering 26/11: Clutching Mumbai

These clutch bags make a special Mumbai souvenir, they stand for something, they're charitable and handcrafted -- it isn't often a fashion accessory actually is as good as it looks
Malaga bagsWe liked the clutch best, but there's also a nice tote bag in blue.

"It's my way of doing something for the city that I love so much and it's a way of not forgetting what happened to this beautiful place almost a year ago," designer Malini Agarwalla told newspapers at the launch of a series of sepia-toned, stylish handbags under the Malaga label, which commemorate the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks in her city.

Stamped with some of the Mumbai’s most recognizable icons -- the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, Rajabai Clock Tower and Flora Fountain, these clutches are meant to symbolize Mumbai’s endurance.

"It's less about fashion and more about contribution of the spirit. We want to say that we're proud to be Mumbaikars," Agarwalla said.

At between Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000 a piece they’re not inexpensive, but part of the proceeds are donated to Mumbai’s Police Department. And the fashion blogs are already reporting some of Mumbai's most spirited society women, such as Deveika Bhojwani, already carrying their handcrafted Malaga Mumbai bags around town.
