CNN Video: Street ingenuity keeps India's recession at bay

It's neither Bollywood nor the IT sector, but roadside dentists, henna tattoo artists and an army of vendors that give recession-beating resilience to the Indian economy

CNN's Sara Sidner discovers that odd jobs run India's economy in this excellent video report on the subcontinent's informal workforce. These are the workers who set up shop on the street, often without an education, without a license, without a corporate structure, without even a storefront to speak of.

The International Labor Organization estimates about 95 percent of India's workforce makes its living in what is known as the "informal" or "unorganized" sector. Work conditions are poor, but economists say these workers are the real reason India fought the recession so well, given that this part of the economy is not tied to global markets.
