Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla are like the Christian Lacroix of India, the ultimate in bespoke, bridal haute couture.
The long time design duo known as Abu Sandeep weaves precious Indian threads into elegant garments ranging from linen salwar kameez (a traditional dress comprised of a tunic and loose pants) sewn and embellished with a sliver of gota (silver or gold trimmings), to bridal couture weighing many kilos for the even slimmer sliver of women in this country with the necessary fortune to spare for it.
Budding brides go barmy at Abu Sandeep's lair in Kemps Corner, where menswear is also available, by order only. Those truly saddled by excess capital can unload it on a bespoke Abu Sandeep jacket in pure resham (fine silk thread work) or buy a luxurious kurta adorned with chikan (delicate embroidery).
As testament to how tight this fashion tandem has become with the wealthy upper tier of India's social circuit, Abu Sandeep are hosting their own TV show, "The First Ladies," launched earlier this year. Bad news for anyone hoping for a change in the pricing strategy.
