Sunday is for gallery-hopping in South Mumbai
Mumbai gallerists have shaken off the shackles of the 1980s and 1990s when galleries opened in garages and houses. Sree Goswami’s Project 88 (pictured above), is a converted warehouse that once housed a printing press. 10 core Mumbai art galleries from the Colaba/Fort area have agreed to open on Sunday and late on Thursday in an effort to re-energize interest in art in the city.
On the fourth Sunday and the second Thursday of every month (that's Thursday August 11 and Sunday August 28 this month) galleries will open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and till 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Suburban Mumbaikars know just how painful it is to reach the nether tip of Mumbai during weekday evening rush hours when the city's best galleries hold their opening cocktails for shows.
Saturday in Mumbai counts as a weekday and Sunday has traditionally been Shabbat day for the art world.
But Mumbai's contemporary art galleries should have contemporary opening hours. And now you have no excuse.
Participating galleries in the so-called Art 4 Sunday movement are Chatterjee & Lal, Chemould Prescott Road, Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Gallery Beyond, Gallery Maskara, Lakeeren, Mumbai Art Room, Project 88, Sakshi Gallery and The Guild Gallery.
These galleries and a few others constitute Mumbai's art district, because they are located close to each other allowing viewers to travel between galleries and see multiple shows in a short amount of time.
