'Na Jaane Kyun': Gay film takes a kiss to the movies

Many Indian men hold hands in public, but will they swallow a big screen Bollywood kiss?
Na Jaane KyunWorldwide media wants to call this India's answer to "Brokeback Mountain" but we say hold your horses.
Following the historic ruling last year decriminalizing homosexuality in India, debutant director Sanjay Sharma has filmed "Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun" (Don't Know Why), India's first mainstream Bollywood feature film to explore homosexuality planned for release in May this year.

The story is of a struggling actor who compromises his morals to advance in Mumbai's film industry. Promotional posters depict two men, semi-nude, in an intimate embrace. Sharma's brother Kapil plays the lead male character, but the film also features more established Bollywood stars Zeenat Aman, Helen and Kabir Bedi.

To top it all off, India will witness its first on-screen, male-on-male, lip-locked kiss. We're pretty sure this will ruffle some feathers, especially among Mumbai's Shiv Sena crowd. We dare you NOT to be offended, Mr Thackery.

A BBC article says, "The subject of gay relationships is still a taboo issue in India and Dunno Y is expected to stir plenty of controversy as it promises to be the country's boldest portrayal of a serious and explicit sexual relationship between two men."

"I'm not afraid of anything," director Sharma is quoted as saying. "I stand by my conviction."

The film is being released in English as well and the filmmakers are hoping for an easy ride at the notoriously squeamish Indian Censor Board.
