Her Work Is Never Done: 26 women collide in a Mumbai art gallery
(Image: "Amudha", "Shakti", "Chinna Ponnu", Nandini Valli Muthiah, 2009, Courtesy Gallery BMB)At Mumbai's new Gallery BMB, big is best. Following January's LaVa show, a gargantuan collection of reference items as a sort of laboratory for the people, Bose Krishnamachari's latest curatorial effort brings together 26 women artists in a two-part show over February and March 2010.
"Her Work is Never Done" has its first installation beginning today and despite its nice title the exhibition presents, a little self-consciously, the outdated idea that artists today "need not necessarily be defined by their gender", but by their "outstanding talent" instead.
What's appealing though are the varied fields from which these women spring, such as architecture, photography, graphic design, fashion, video, painting and installation, all expressing their concepts without restriction. The artists are: Aishwarya Laxmi, Atmaja Manidas, Charmi Gada Shah, Dia Mehta, Divya Thakur, Koumudi Patil, Nisha Ghosh, Parvathy Nayyar, Poorna Rajpal, PS Jalaja, Puja Puri, Remen Chopra, Sakshi Gupta, Siji R Krishnan, Suchitra Gahlot, Nandini Valli, Leena Kejriwal, Parul Thakker, Nivedita Deshpande, Little Shilpa, Sukanya Ghosh, Shaina Anand, Lavanya Mani.
