Mumbai to get beach as good as Goa's
An unusually quiet photo of a Mumbai beach. Don't get carried away. The water is not fine.Oh the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The beloved BMC. They endanger our watering holes and now they'd like to build us a beach. A beach as good as Goa, the civic body says.
This week local news channels report a BMC plan to "revitalize" the shores between Mahim and Worli, currently lined with sharp rocks.
Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Rahul Shewale told papers the "plan is to extend the beach line from the current three metres to 50 meters," using 175,000 cubic metres of sand and Rs 14 crores of public money.
The work has begun, Shewale says, and the beach is expected to be ready by June this year.
Another waterfront project is also underway at Chimbai Beach near Bandra, which involves building a beach and a walkway.
Hey, we could soon be like Barcelona where workers take their lunch breaks at the shore.
They park their scooters, take off their helmets, strip down to their bikinis and spend an hour on the sand, before heading back to work.
Will our travel brochure image shortly change from land of the slums to 'breathtaking, beach-lined port city on the Arabian Sea?'
Oh, BMC say it is so.
"They are going to tie up with associations that tend to the beaches in Goa and learn how to keep the beaches shiny, sandy and safe," reports one newspaper.
It's so easy to get carried away by the dream. Let the environmentalists remind us that it's sewage suffused water we'll be sitting next to.
