Batti Bandh
"Baaaaaattttttttttiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Bbbbbbbaaaaaaannnnnnnddddhhhhhh!" says their Facebook page!

The Batti Bandh initiative falls on December 12 between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. During these 60 minutes you switch off all your lights and electrical appliances and in doing so join the 966+ climate conscious Twitterers who are also members of the local Batti Bandh Facebook group.

Batti Bandh is an Indianized version of Earth Hour 60 conceptualized in 2007 by a bunch of volunteers in Mumbai, led by Keith Menon. The 'batti' or the light bulb is a commonly used Hindi slang and 'bandh' means to switch off.

Organizer Kaizad Bhamgara told us how they've been spreading awareness via mutiple platforms, especially social media which he says, "is the best way because it's fastest and cheapest. But also good will -- we've had loads of volunteering this year. Since we don't ask for donations, we ask that you spread the word, our friends in the press have given us lots of space, friends who work in big corporations have spread the word there, our radio jockey friends gave us talking spots on air and people in Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai and Kokata called and asked if they could help us with Batti Bandh in their cities."

Talking to Kaizad I could feel the energy, so to speak. Do it. Unplug. December 12, 7:30pm. Batti Bandh.
