Mumbai International Film Festival starts today
Run by India's Films Division, MIFF may not be slickly marketed, but it's a mecca for lovers of documentaries and short films.MIFF is it
Held every two years the 'Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films' has come into its own in an assuredly plodding manner.
Run by the government sponsored Films Division, in terms of glamor MIFF is a little deficient. But its followers are loyal. "While there have been several festivals in the city that screen international films, this annual event showcases short films exclusively," says festival director Kuldeep Sinha in an Indian Express article. "Documentaries are the poor cousins of glamorous mainstream cinema. We don’t get as much support as they do, but we have seen the popularity of documentary films surge over the years,” he adds. The MIFF selection committee purportedly received over 800 entries this year.
The 11th Mumbai International Film Festival will screen 200 short films and documentaries from 40 countries. Read film critic Deepa Gahlot's recommendations for what to watch this year in MidDay.
Held at the National Centre for Performing Arts from February 3-9. Screening schedule here.
