Mad hatter from Mumbai: little shilpa

Our thrifty, nifty hat-maker Shilpa Chavan has junk on her mind for Autumn/Winter 2009
little shilpaThe Battle Royale Autumn/Winter 09 collection was shown at Lakme Fashion Week.

Called little Shilpa by friends on account of her small frame, Mumbai's only milliner on the runway is a tremendous force of creativity and craft revivalism.

This year's Autumn/Winter pieces were inspired by anachronistic military decorations, carving out a new space for fashion art in Mumbai.

With a prestigious degree from Central Saint Martins college in London and a stint with milliner extraordinaire Philip Treacy under her belt, Shilpa Chavan moved back to Mumbai, called her brand littleshilpa and began to wear many hats (pun intended) -- costume stylist, jewelry designer, installation artist and of course, designer of fabulous and fun head gear for women.

Her fascination with archaic knick-knacks from Mumbai bazaars makes her well loved by CNNGo. She will often pick up something very ordinary or humble -- old military badges, bangles, rubber henna stencils, rubber flip flops, take that object, multiply it, glue it together, attach a head band to it and voila -- a major fashion statement. She now shows at Lakme Fashion Week and has received a bucket of critical acclaim.

Little Shilpa is taking us on an audio visual tour of her favorite bazaars and markets next month. See you then. Bring some cash.
