An ice bar in Mumbai set at 21 Fahrenheit?
Totally unexpected for a city like Mumbai, but although it's sub zero at this suburban concept bar it's still not cool enough
By Tarini Awatramani 3 December, 2009A recent addition to Mumbai’s nightlife, 21 Fahrenheit, India’s first ice bar or ice lounge, gives you a taste of what it feels like to drink in the Tundra.
The temperature at the bar, that looks like a high-tech igloo with neon lights, is below zero. Everything from the bar counter itself to the glasses you drink out of, are made of ice. It is so cold you have to wear over sized coats, moon boots and gloves provided to you before you enter. If you're hoping to show off any piece of clothing at this place you can just forget about it.
If the cold doesn’t kill your appetite the teeny, tiny menu will, though the dessert section is not without a hint of irony featuring a Chocolate Lava Cake and a range of ice creams. I recommend ordering a few rounds of their creative Ice Age shots to warm up the blood.
And if that doesn't work, there is refuge from the arctic den in the normal bar outside. Bar tenders and staff members rotate between the two every thirty minutes, which is the average time a person can spend on the ice.
While the experience is certainly novel, even welcome in warm and humid Mumbai, interest may disappear with the feeling in your fingers after one or two expeditions. Too bad we can't say this is the hottest new bar in town.
