Mumbai monorail makes its first move
Each coach can accommodate up to 130 persons. These are the same monorail coaches that exist in Kuala Lumpur.Soon Mumbai will have cars moving on single beams above our heads on an elevated corridor.
A successful trial run of India's first monorail car has taken place in Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, tells us (via Rediff Business) that the project is expected to be completed in 2011 and that about "three-and-a-half-lakh commuters (350,000), mainly the city's working class, will benefit from this air-conditioned transport system."
The Rs 2,460-crore (Rs 24.6 billion) project, an initiative of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, will create a rail route over 20km long between Jacob Circle and Chembur towards the east.
