Ashram-bound Julia Roberts comes to India for "Eat, Pray, Love" adaptation

After she finishes filming in NYC and Italy, the glamour queen will head to an authentic Indian spiritual retreat to play pretend yogini
From walking the red carpet to washing floors in an Indian ashram.
Now that Julia Roberts has begun shooting the film version of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' Elizabeth Gilbert’s travelogue of self-discovery, one lucky ashram will have Hollywood royalty at its doorstep. With film crew and usual hangers-on in tow.

In her bestselling 2006 book, Gilbert is careful not to disclose the name of the real-life ashram at which she stayed, revealing only that it was located somewhere outside Mumbai.

But by now everyone and her husband has heard the speculation that the strung-out New York writer attained her hard-won modicum of enlightenment at the Gurudev Siddha Peeth at Ganeshpuri in Maharashtra. An enlightenment Roberts now has to quickly get a handle on. (For more on the trend of 'ashramming,' click here.)

Scenes for the film will not be shot at Siddha Peeth. That would be insensitive. Instead, authentic ashram life -- community service, meditation, yoga -- will be filmed at an as-yet-unnamed ashram reportedly located somewhere along the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway.

"Eat, Pray, Love" is being helmed by Emmy-nominated director Ryan Murphy, and will feature Javier Bardem, Richard Jenkins, Viola Davis, James Franco and Billy Crudup.

We can’t wait to hear what Julia sounds like reciting Sanskrit shlokas after training with a 'spiritual consultant.' No matter what our opinion, her effort is sure to inspire a new generation of wannabe yogis.

Hollywood’s nod to nirvana isn't due out till 2011, so we've got plenty of time to brace ourselves.
