3 sweetest spots for wine by Mumbai's waterfront

Drown in a bottle of white at the city's choicest seaside restaurants with a view
It may no longer be the trendiest spot in town, but Vie's unparalleled sea view hasn't lost favor.

Mumbai may be a lot of things, but beachy ain't among them. Shortsighted laws blocking waterfront development have robbed us of the beach dining culture enjoyed in most every other coastal clime. The closure of beachfront mainstay Salt Water Grill didn't help matters, but that still leaves these top three shore shots for a little goat cheese and wine with a view of the sea.

1. Aurus: Fusion seafood and Sangria

On brightly lit Juhu Tara road, keep your eyes peeled for a doorman and the valet staff -- they’re the only way to recognize the non-descript entrance to this new-world outpost on the ground floor of an apartment block by the sea.

The view and sea breeze are tops. The fusion food is adventurous with shades of molecular gastronomy, and the wine list is well-stocked. Which means they have what they say they have, often not the case at restaurants in Mumbai. The only downside is the routine roar of airplanes every few minutes and Aurus' impolite wait staff.

2. Vista: Pizza and Pinot Grigio

Vista is the 24-hour coffee shop at the Taj Lands End hotel, a building otherwise known as Bollywood’s unofficial meeting place.

Though Vista is a bit touristy, it still has cachet with locals. We ignore the buffet and gun straight for the margherita pizza (theirs is one of the city’s best) or a tasty burger, and chase it with a bottle of vino from Vista's new world wine list -- South Africa, Chile and India.

The real draw here is Vista's amazing view, which can only be enjoyed during the day. At night it's a total blackout.

3. Vie Lounge & Deck: Mediterranean and Merlot

Before Aurus launched down the street, this was the best seaside bar in the burbs, and it still draws diners, just not Mumbai’s hippest, most fashionable ones.

Vie is sea-facing, offering a Mediterranean feel more Greek island than Mumbai. The Tequila tiger prawns are good, the mezze even better when shared, and the drinks are as stiff as an accountant. In other words, this place works well for dinner dates.

They also provide a fairly expansive Sunday brunch, should you seek to see the seashore by day. Another advantage they've got on Aurus is a deck, giving it the beachiest feel of them all.
