Conde Nast Readers' Travel Awards 2011: What India won

Travelers vote for Taj palaces and luxury train journeys
Falaknuma PalaceThe Falaknuma Palace is the former residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad and contains real Venetian chandeliers, marble staircases, fountains and Japanese gardens and even a library replica of the one at Windsor Castle.

On September 7 in London the Condé Nast Readers' Travel Awards announced the best places to stay in the world according to service, facilities and value for money in 2011.

What did travellers and readers pick for India?

Taj palaces in Mumbai and Hyderabad

Mumbai's Taj Mahal Palace Hotel has been ranked second in the overseas business hotel category and 12th within the world's top 100 hotels. 

Taj's newest property -- the Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad -- won in the overseas leisure hotels category for Asia and the Indian subcontinent and was voted a surprising seventh in the world's top 100 hotels. 

The Falaknuma palace is the former residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad.

India's luxury trains

The Maharajas' Express, India's most luxurious train, was runner-up in the Specialist Train Operators category.

Passengers arrive at a new station every morning and their itinerary includes visits to India's heritage sites, wildlife sancturies, bazaar shopping and dining at palaces and forts in Rajasthan.

The train contains 20 deluxe cabins, 18 junior suites, four suites while the grand presidential suite occupies an entire carriage.

Palace on Wheels, another luxury train service in India, was voted sixth best by Condé Nast readers.
