Sathya Sai Baba's old Rolls-Royce lives in Bandra

A Mumbai automobile engineer says the Rolls is lucky for business. And it's not for sale

"On weekends, this is what my family drives to a dinner in," says Irphan Mogul, owner of a 1971 Silver Shadow One Rolls-Royce that once belonged to spiritual guru Sathya Sai Baba.

As millions mourn the guru's death this past Sunday, Mogul, an automobile engineer whose company Toyota Tech repairs luxury cars, shares details with the Hindustan Times on the classic motor car that he's proud to own.

According to the registration papers, Sathya Sai Baba owned the Rolls-Royce from 1972 to 1984. The registered number plate was then listed as ADA 9, in the name of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Prasanti Nilayam, Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh.

Mogul bought the car from its owner in New Delhi 15 years ago and in 2004 it won the award for best restored vehicle at a rally celebrating Rolls-Royce's centenary.

When asked by DNA whether he would mind selling the car to Sachin Tendulkar, a long-time devotee of Sai Baba, Mogul replies, “Sachin will not ask me for this one. After all, each of Sachin’s cars comes to my garage for servicing. He knows how important this car is for our business. It will remain with us forever.”
