Priyanka Chopra is a global pop star, before we've heard a single note
(L to R) Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records Jimmy Iovine, actress and singer Priyanka Chopra, Lady Gaga's manager Troy Carter and Anjula Acharia-Bath, founder of Desi Hits!Award-winning 29-year-old Indian actress Priyanka Chopra is going where no Bollywood icon has gone before. She's marching into the global music business and we don't even know if she can hold a note.
You've heard from her before that she likes to sing but, according to reports, declined to do so on television shows "Indian Idol" and "Koffee with Karan".
So it comes as a surprise when on Friday last week a beside-herself Chopra announced via Twitter that "a long cherished dream" was "finally coming true." She'd signed a worldwide record deal with Universal Music Group and Desi Hits!, an online East/West fusion entertainment platform, to produce a pop album.
In fact, the actress is already in a Los Angeles studio, writing and recording her debut album which will be sung in English. And guess who she's sharing a manager with?
Lady Gaga.
“Bollywood has had Priyanka to itself for too long,” says David Joseph, chairman and chief executive of Universal Music UK.
But did we, really?
