Mumbai's cabs and autos get a raise

Last week auto rickshaw base fares increased and starting today taxi fares go the same route, leaving us not only wet from waiting in the rain but struggling to calculate the new rates as well
Hot on the heels of a flash strike by thousands of auto rickshaw drivers, fares for the suburb's black and yellow bees known as "autos" or "ricks", went up last week. "The minimum fare is now Rs 11 from Rs 9 for the first 1.6 kilometers, and every subsequent kilometre will cost Rs 6.50, up from Rs 5 now," Bombay Autorickshaw and Taximen's Union president Sharad Rao said. The hike affects about 105,000 autorickshaws in Mumbai.

Not to be left out, effective starting today, Mumbai's taxi fare has also increased by Rs 2. Mumbai Taximen Union president A L Quadros, confirms: "The base fare has been increased from the present Rs 14 to Rs 16. And for every subsequent kilometer, the fare will increased from Rs 9 to Rs 10."

Given that cabs carry fake rate cards sometimes, here are the official rate cards for taxis and autos, to which you need to apply the above increases.

While you calculate that (good luck) and while the unions and consumer bodies dispute the rise, how about a free ride courtesy this CNNGo Mumbai video?
