Give and take: New transport rules to know

Fines for breaking local traffic laws have become heavier than a Mumbai bus. But for delayed air flights you can now claim upto Rs 4,000 in compensation

It's as much as a three-fold increase for traffic rule violation fines in Mumbai now. The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 has been amended by the state of Maharashtra so that if you break a red light it's no longer Rs 100 but Rs 300. If you break a speed limit it's now Rs 1,200. And if your breath has alcohol on it, you can cough up Rs 6,000 as a first-time offender.

But it's not all take. The aviation industry is set to give back in the form of financial compensation -- between Rs 2,000 to 4,000 -- for delayed (by more than two hours), cancelled or full flights. Earlier your only recourse were the consumer courts. The new policy goes up on the Directorate General of Civial Aviation's website shortly. Meanwhile "the Unites States and the United Kingdom have compensation policies in place for the past decade," the Hindustan Times reminds us.
