British Airways, Kingfisher Airlines become family

From September 15 the two will share each others flights, booking engines, frequent flyer programs and lounges -- that's a lot of beer

From Wednesday next week, September 15, British Airways and India's Kingfisher Airlines will share bookings, frequent flyer schemes and lounge access on cheaper flights across India, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and Europe. It's called codesharing, but don't say that unless you're desperate to impress a future parent-in-law.

BA has been flying to India for 80 years keeping post-colonial ties tight. They already fly from Heathrow to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai but now its passengers won't have to switch baggage tags to carry on to 11 domestic Indian routes including Kolkata, Goa, Coimbatore, Kochi and Colombo in Sri Lanka.

We on the other hand, can already fly "India's first and only five star airline" from Delhi and Mumbai to Heathrow but next week will be able to book on Kingfisher's website straight to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Lisbon and Paris.

And yes, "five star" is seriously how Kingfisher Airlines chairman and chief executive Dr Vijay Mallya describes his fleet of planes which share a brand name with, of all things, the country's most popular beer.

For the business angle behind all this codesharing love, read Business Standard's Q&A with Willie Walsh, CEO, British Airways.
