Best late night eats in Mumbai

From kebabs to hookahs, Mumbai's after-hours eateries offer a wild ride featuring brain fry and green chili ice cream

Though most restaurants in the city shut by 1:30 a.m. -- with last orders taken around 11 p.m. -- some great eateries stay open well into the morning.

Bademiya
Bademiya is often the first eatery that comes to mind for after-hours diners in Mumbai.

Bademiya

It’s perfectly normal to see patrons stumble out of Gokul bar across the street, looking for a snack at this open-air roll-and-kebab shack behind The Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Colaba.

Waiters run about taking orders. Tables and chairs line both sides of the road, and are perpetually full. Everything smells like fresh kebabs.

Open: Till 4 a.m. Separate vegetarian menu and home delivery available.

Ayub
Super-quick waiters rattle off Ayub's entire menu by heart at your car-door window.

A quieter version of Bademiya, though somewhat cooler, with a roof overhead.

The North Indian food (chicken and mutton tava, kebabs and rolls) goes for about Rs 100 a dish.

Zaffran
Chenna payesh at Zaffran is a light, creamy dessert. Delicious.

Zaffran

A two-tiered Mughlai restaurant in Crawford Market, the lower section resembles a fine-dining establishment and an upper deck represents what at first looks like a love nest.

A chicken biryani goes for Rs 300. Zaffran also serves pizzas, burgers and other snacks in the same price range.

The chenna payesh (Rs 65) is an excellent Indian dessert.

Open: 7 p.m.-4 a.m., daily

Muhammed Ali Road
Fried quail on Muhammed Ali Road is available only during Ramzan.

Open-air restaurants on Ebrahim Merchant Road

The best time to go to Ebrahim Merchant Road, off Mohammed Ali Road, is during Ramzan, when a variety of meats and internal organs -- chicken, mutton, beef, quail -- are cooked openly alongside the street at a series of open-air restaurants.

A plate of fried quail (butar) lightens your wallet by Rs 150 and isn’t more than a snack, so for your main course go to Sarvi, next to the nearby Nagpada Police Station.

Sarvi closes around midnight, but you don’t want to miss the best beef kebabs in Mumbai.

Open: Till 3 a.m.

Ebrahim Merchant Road, next to Minara Masjid, off Mohammed Ali Road, Masjid Bunder.

Bachelorrs
Bachelorr's has the best roadside chocolate milkshake in Mumbai. The mango shake is also good.

Bachelorr’s

This is the definitive, late-night, roadside ice cream parlor in Mumbai.

Situated on seafront Marine Drive, less than a five-minute walk from Charni Road station, you can spot this little stall by the hatchbacks lined up outside all night.

With hatches open, happy customers sit in or on top of their cars feasting on ice cream, fresh juice and snacks.

Bachelorr's range of ice creams is mind boggling, and includes a famous spicy green chili flavor. The chocolate shakes are superlative.
