The father of modern Chinese painting, Wu Guanzhong, passed away last Friday, June 25 in Beijing at the age of 90. Coincidence has it that the Hong Kong Museum of Art is currently holding an exhibition of works by Wu completed between 2005 and 2009, attracting Hong Kongers to visit after learning about the death of the master.

The artist became known for using traditional Chinese ink brush techniques to produce an aesthetic that is distinctly influenced by western art, in both ink and oil mediums. Earlier this month, he sold an oil painting from 1974 for US$8.4 million at a Beijing auction.

In his last years, Wu donated many of his works to museums, including five pieces to the Hong Kong Museum of Art to make the current total of 52 pieces. The South China Morning Post reported that he created four last works this year, which will be displayed in Hong Kong this month.
