Streets of Your City: The ultimate guide to Hong Kong's NoHo neighborhood

We've mapped it out, polished it up and connected the dots through this dynamic district -- just for you

Revolution, prostitution and printing! Welcome to NoHo.

‘Twas a time when this area wasn’t so full of bars, restaurants, designer stores and boutiques. Imagine it crammed with squalid tenements, homes to extended Chinese families squeezed into tiny spaces shortly after the arrival of the British. Then, around the turn of the 19th century, it played host to revolutionary meetings attended by Sun Yat-sen. In the early 20th century, it was the center of a busy commercial area -- and the red light district. On Wo Lane was once known as Yi Nai Lane -- legend has it one merchant bought all the houses on the street for his mistress, or yi nai. Later, the brothels moved west and the neighborhood was filled with shophouses, grocery stores, workshops and printing houses.

Fast forward to the present, and nearly all of the old shophouses have been redeveloped, the area an alluring mix of traditional street vendors and fashionable new stores and restaurants -- many having moved here after being priced out of trendy SoHo. Paul’s Kitchen, a Western-style bistro, is where those revolutionary meetings were once held, designer boutiques where family-run grocery shops once stood.

This is NoHo -- rich in history, full of variety and arguably Hong Kong’s most eclectic neighborhood.

1. Cage Restaurant

Like the birdcages from which it takes its name, this small bar and restaurant is a cozy, delicate place. Purple sofas and high tables fill the long, narrow interior, which is bookended by two small terraces overlooking the quiet, leafy steps of Mee Lun and Shing Hing streets. There's a dozen wines available by the glass, many of them French, and Vietnamese snacks to help along the drinks.

2. Sing Heung Yuen

This dai pai dong is always packed, and office workers on their lunch break during the week are willing to line up for ages just for a taste of that tomato soup macaroni. It's intensely tomatoey and slightly ketchupy, waking up tastebuds and numbed, office-drone minds. The pork chop sandwich shaped like a heart is not bad either.

3. Cookie Galerie

Open the door to this tiny Aberdeen Street bakery and you'll be hit by the intense aroma of sweet, sweet butter. On one side of the shop there's tailor-made, haute-couture cakes, which cost between $3,000 and $10,000. On the other, a newly-launched line of precious little cookies flavored with teas and nuts. You can also get some Hong Kong-style macaroons, which take the traditional French egg white-and-almond pastry and tone down the sweetness for local palates. Closed Mondays. Check out Cookie Galerie's Ichigo Ichie macaroons in our NoHo gift guide.

4. Red Tavern Restaurant

The high-end hotel chef goes local -- it's becoming a trend. In this case, the chef of Pierrot at the Mandarin Oriental has decamped for the more humble surroundings of NoHo, where he crafts European-inspired set meals that change every week. Among the most recent offerings -- pan-fried goose liver, roasted lamb neck salad and grilled Kurobuta pork.

5. Ichiba Japanese Restaurant

Specializing in the raw stuff, Ichiba does value lunch sets and also J-brunch on weekends. Sushi for brunch? They make it happen with sea urchin and toro, among other ingredients.

7. The Real Bread Company

Sadly for NoHo residents and visitors, the closest you can get to the goodies baked here is to inhale the wonderful aroma. Or see piles of loaves, buns and others carted out of the doors. The Real Bread Company serves its fresh goods to many SoHo restaurants and the Hong Kong Cricket Club. The staff is friendly with the neighborhood, often found in conversation outside while the ovens work. Though you can chit-chat with the baking crew, you need to hop over to Shelley Street to veteran baker Peter Lowe's Real Bread Company cafe for a taste. Location below.

8. The Chairman

Nostalgia and nationalism meet at this old new-world restaurant. The curtains, dark oak, chandeliers and excellent service hark back to post-war Hong Kong. The Cantonese menu serves up classics in small portions.

9. Yachiyo Japanese Restaurant

10. Basement Restaurant

Basement is the restobar child of furniture store Homeless, and it's hidden just under its mothership. The food is fusion European fare, but Basement is much better known for its quirky, hip design factor. A long wooden tunnel lined with bubbly black seating, design cutlery, mismatched chairs -- it won't look like your average dining experience. Its parfait is highly recommended. Check out Basement's Christmas set dinner in our NoHo gift guide.

11. Ngau Kee Food Café

This refugee from SoHo overdevelopment moved to Gough Street just three years ago, but it already feels like it's been there forever. Homey Cantonese classics like steamed fish and squid in black bean sauce are the order of the day here, but there's also some Hong Kong-style innovations too, like pork chops fried in mayonnaise.

19. Gingko House

Gingko House is known not only for decent food, but also for great service provided by a staff of old folks. We're not talking about the frowny, acerbic types typically found at cha chaan tengs -- we're talking about restless retirees, many of whom recently held mid- to high-level management jobs and who do not want to slow down. The recently-opened companion to Paul's Kitchen, this small, intimate bar offers two excellent wine lists (one based on value and the other geared towards wine connoisseurs) and a menu of tapas dishes like foie gras on French bread and thick cuts of salmon. 26. Gallery Exit

Not many one-year-olds can claim to be this precocious. Since it opened last year, Gallery EXIT has already taken a leading role in the Central art scene, focusing on avant-garde artists from Hong Kong, China and other parts of Asia. Last summer, it exhibited obsessively detailed drawings by young Hong Kong artists, including the acclaimed Kong Chun-hei. Most recently, the abstract, gold- and mineral-based compositions of Japanese-American artist Makoto Fujimura's show "Charis." Check out Fujimura's "White Moon" piece in our NoHo gift guide.

28. Art Statements Gallery

Dominique Perregaux' gallery MO has always represented its namesake, and he proved that he's still got it earlier this year when the gallery made headlines in every newspaper in town as his artist -- the French graffiti master Zevs -- was prosecuted for vandalizing Chater House. Art crimes aside, Perregaux' special projects are always bold. He also curates some top personal and corporate collections in Hong Kong. Check out Erwin Olaf's "Fashion Victims: YSL" in our NoHo gift guide

29. Amelia Johnson Contemporary Gallery

Nestled on the steep stairway, don't let Amelia Johnson's size fool you -- the taste level here is top notch. The gallery represents Macau-based Russian artist Konstantin Bessmertny, with his kitsch-fantastic paintings often on show, and a slew of internationally-renowned contemporary artists. Showing strong commitment to the local art community, the gallery is involved in many art initiatives around town. The current exhibition is "MULTI{ple}," a four-artist discussion on mass production.

30. Visage One

Benky Chan is a fan of beauty au naturale in the face of heavy commercialism and this age of artifice. Between pages of Thomas Mann, Chan cuts hair for $450. The place looks more like an art studio than a hair salon -- mirrors on easels, wooden 'found' furniture, a small library upstairs, and bonus, there's a bar. Every first and third Saturday, musicians are invited to crash for jamming amongst jazz lovers with wine, whiskey and cigarettes in hand.

60. Out of Stock

A newcomer to the NoHo decor scene, Out of Stock marries kitsch and vintage-inspired knick-knacks with more modern creations like Scandinavian furniture. It's a cluttered space, like a basement well-stocked with forgotten treasures. Outside, on the sidewalk, you'll sometimes find furniture that is being "down-bidded" -- the price is reduced each day until somebody snaps it up.

Wow! All this on a back street just around the corner from Central? There are very few times I wish I still lived in the 'hood - and this is definitely one of them ... I remember what it look like a few short years ago and send my best congratulations to the creative entrepreneurs who built this amazing new community - a model to inspire other parts of HK and, in fact, Asia ... and beyond. I'm coming to shop, eat and drink and play very soon!
amazing how diversified HK is. it's no wonder there you would be at a boredom if you visit. imagine with almost a block or two you get to have wide range of choices. kudos!
