US$1,000 iPad 2 available in Hong Kong

The iPad 2 sells like hot cakes on Hong Kong's gray market just days after its U.S. release

A few days after the official iPad 2 launch in the United States, the gadget is already selling on Hong Kong's grey market for twice the price.

The 16GB Wi-Fi edition of the iPad 2 is selling at about US$1,000 in Hong Kong, double the official price of $499. To get the white version, customers must pay another couple hundred American dollars. This is more than what Apple fans paid for the last iPad model on the gray market.

The Next Web reports that one "master of the gray market" called Kurt Lo prepared eight couriers to transport 200 iPads from U.S. cities to Hong Kong to take advantage of the gray market prices.

The first international launch of the iPad 2 will be on March 25 and includes Canada, Mexico, parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. No word yet on when the launch will happen for the iPad 2 in Hong Kong, but some say it could be as long as six months.
