Octopus card ties up with Shenzhen Tong

Hong Kong's Octopus card and it's Shenzhen equivalent -- the Shenzhen Tong -- will soon become one, in a move that will further tighten cross-border relations.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced yesterday that a new two-in-one smart card for travel and shopping in Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be available within a year. Eventually, Hong Kongers will be able to "doot" their way through the entire Pearl River Delta region.

Currently 11 fast food outlets in Shenzhen and four border control points accept the Octopus card. Non transport transactions using the Octopus card rose from six percent in 2002 to 36 percent in 2009.
