Shanghai Tang moves into Mongolian yurts in Hong Kong

The luxury brand gets kicked out of its home of 17 years and embraces nomadism with Mongolian-themed store

Shanghai Tang will be moving into yurts -- the tents favored by Mongolian nomads -- by November.

After 17 years at the Pedder Building in Central, Shanghai Tang lost the bid for the space to Abercrombie & Fitch, which agreed to pay two and half times the previous rent.

Rent more than doubled to HK$7 million for the original flagship store space in the Pedder Building.

"If you want to be seen, you have to be in Central," Raphael le Masne de Chermont, Shanghai Tang's executive chairman, told the South China Morning Post.

"All those brands from the Western world want to take a piece of the mainland market. Real estate went berserk and we had to adapt.

So from November 4 to December 31, the luxury brand will move into the Shanghai Tang Mongolian Village, a temporary retail space on the top of Central Ferry Pier 4.

In tune with its Mongolia-themed Christmas collection, Shanghai Tang will be selling limited edition gift choices inside the yurts. Other signature Shanghai Tang products will also be available, from ready-to-wear for women, men and children, to accessories, fragrances, and homeware.

In addition, a Shanghai Tang loft will open from October 23 to February 20, 2012 on the 6th floor of the Pedder Building, just upstairs from the original flagship store location.

By next March, a new flagship store will open in a four-story building in Central. Dubbed the Shanghai Tang Mansion, the new store will be twice as large as the former premises.

The last day of trading for Shanghai Tang at Pedder Building will be October 23.
