iPad's Hong Kong release: Stores sell out in minutes
These are the lucky 180 at City Plaza Taikoo Shing's Fortress store who scored iPads today in Hong Kong. The iPad has landed in Hong Kong and Appleheads lined up from early morning at City Plaza Taikoo Shing's Fortress store to ensure their iPad entrance tickets. There are currently 21 outlets in Hong Kong selling iPads at HK$3,000 to HK$6,000. With the iPad in short supply lines at iPad retailers around Hong Kong were expected to show similar scenes to what we saw at City Plaza.
According to one of the City Plaza Shopping Centre representatives on hand, all 180 tickets for the iPad were given out within 30 minutes after the sales began at 10 a.m. with a few fans arriving as early as 6:30 a.m. to secure one of the tickets.
Two of those ticket holders were Leon Lau and his friend Ben Wong. Lau said, “The 16 GB one sold out really soon and I had the last 16 GB WiFi in store.” He also mentioned that he was exchanging intelligence with friends this morning on which stores to go to.
Another successful buyer Tony Au said, “There are quite a lot of sellers in the line from what I overheard. They plan to resell them after purchase.”
Not surprising, considering that according to Bloomberg News, Hong Kong has been serving as an important source for unauthorized supplies of Apple products in the mainland due to the slow launch, limited sales channels, release delays and higher prices.
