Security, excitement build ahead of HK Apple store opening

Apple fanatics expected to start queuing 48 hours before Saturday's debut
Apple store IFC Hong KongApple will be hoping the new IFC store can take a hefty bite out of the lucrative Hong Kong tech market.

Security personnel are already in place at Hong Kong’s IFC mall more than 48 hours ahead of the official opening of the city’s first Apple store this Saturday.

Long lines are anticipated with thousands of Apple fans and curious shoppers eyeing the promise of discount prices and promotions on offer to the first group of consumers to hit the store. That and the added bonus of bragging rights for the first few into the new store.

The 1,858-square-meter Apple store at the IFC in Central district will be the company’s fifth in China.

Apple launched its first store in China in 2008 and now has two stores in Beijing, as well as two in Shanghai.

The China stores generate the company's highest traffic and highest revenue on average, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in January.

According to Bloomberg, the China region generated US$8.8 billion in revenue for Apple in the past three quarters.

Two more Apple stores are reportedly expected to open in Hong Kong in the near future, one at Causeway Bay's Hysan Place and another on Tsim Sha Tsui's Canton Road.
