Top 10 things to do at the Hurley Surf Cup 2009
Pitching tents and digging holes for toilets makes Hurley Surf Cup 2009 a bit of an adventure -- and not just for posers.2. Take on the waves Why not have a go yourself? The guys from X Games will be on hand to show you how.
3. Feel virtuous Reaching Tai Long Wan may feel like you have become an extra in Leonardo DiCaprio’s film “The Beach.” To get there you have to hike for over an hour. The vast beach, flanked by craggy mountains is worth the effort. Honestly.
4. Be at one with nature There's no electricity, no fresh water, and ladies - no toilet. As the Boy Scouts would say: “be prepared.”
5. Get in the party spirit Toilets - no. Sound-system and BBQ - yes. The organizers have got the essentials covered. Expect the acoustic rifts of former professional surfers -- Jack Johnson and Donavon Frankenreiter -- to float across the beach. DJ Richard and Rabs will also be providing the live soundtrack to the afternoon. Asahi breweries are one of the co-sponsors so you are sure to be well (de)hydrated.
6. Practice your sports photography skills Pick up your camera, pack your lenses, and practise taking some of the most difficult shots in sports photography.
7. Learn the lingo If you do not use the word “dude” at least twice in a sentence you are not trying hard enough. This your chance to brag about the biggest wave you have ever caught. “The ride was tubular man. Totally gnarly.” OK, so it was in the bath. But really, who’s to know? Like, whatever dude.
8. Stay overnight With over 400 spectators expected to show up you might want to lay claim to your piece of the beach early. Don’t forget your tent.
9. People Watch Tanned, sporty, surfer types. Seriously, what’s not to watch?
10. Look the part You may not have the skills, the chat, or the chilled out vibe to be a convincing surfer, but you can at least look the part. Surf brands Hurley, Sanuk, and Skull Candy are sponsoring the event. Get yourself kitted out. Far out.
