Summer International Film Festival opens in Hong Kong
A scene from "Night Fishing" shot entirely on iPhone. The Summer International Film Festival (SIFF) kicks off on August 9 and for the next two weeks will host the most talked-about films on the international circuit.
Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" will show in Hong Kong for the first time as the SIFF's closing film. It's the director's biggest box office hit in years, and tickets to the sole screening have already sold out.
But tickets are still available for other festival winners such as "Arirang" by Korean arthouse auteur Kim Ki-duk. The film is a non-narrative confessional directed, written, edited and starring the filmmaker. It took home the 2011 Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard Award.
Or check out the award-winning iPhone movie. Korean filmmaking brothers Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong achieved the eerie atmosphere of their ghost story "Night Fishing" by shooting entirely on iPhone. It was awarded the 2011 Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear for Best Short Film.
Hong Kongers will be hoping to catch "Ninja Kids," the full-length film movie version of popular 1990s Japanese cartoon "Nintama Rantaro." A cosplay competition will be held for the film's first screening on August 10. Photos of cosplayers will be published and voted on for prizes. See details at www.hkiff.org.
